Indian Fusion Bellydance with Bridget Salas

This introductory workshop begins with a short talk about history, lineages and context of the dance styles we are drawing from. We will cover foundational bellydance vocabulary as well as application of mudras (hand positions) and padas (foot positions) in a fusion dance context. We will begin by exploring the energetic body with awareness exercises and slowly awaken the body with flowing warm ups and drills. The class will build to culmination with a beautiful dance phrase and conclude with a yoga based cool down.

Dabke is a lively, exuberant form of traditional line and circle dancing originating in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and Palestine. It is a dance for everyone: adults, teens, and children; men and women; boys and girls. Today Dabke has gone beyond meaningful, culturally relevant steps to become a powerful expression of identity and pride, and the dance can be a spectacle of traditional dress, unity and even social protest.
